My father worked for Pennsylvania Railroad, so when we were children we used
to ride the train frequently. It's still my favorite way to travel. We used
to ride the train to New York City just to shop at Macy's. And we had an aunt
who was a nun in New Jersey that we used to visit quite often.
My first airplane ride was to St. Thomas in 1969 while I was still single and
had money to burn. I went there with a girl I worked with. It was quite an
adventure for 2 18 year olds. As I remember we visited all of the U.S. Virgin
Islands and Puerto Rico on that trip. I've never been back, but would love to
go again someday.
My first husband, Roger, was from New Hampshire so we would visit his family
frequently. He was from a small town in the White Mountains. It was
beautiful country - but cold - and lots of snow.
I've traveled pretty often with my job at the Credit Union. I attend meetings
out of town about twice a year - some of the places I've been while working
are: New Orleans, Albuquerque,NM , Orlando (about 10 times), Tampa, Atlanta
GA, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City, Detroit, Valley Forge,PA, and Conneticut. I
know there are some I'm forgetting. Most of the time I travel by myself, but
occasionally I can talk Dave into going with me and combine a vacation with
business. He will only go if we can drive since he doesn't like to fly. The
only time I got him on a plane was when we went to New Mexico. He was fine
once we got there but it took some convincing to get him back on the plane to
come home.
Dave is from North Carolina so we spend alot of time traveling 95 and 85
visiting family in Raleigh and Winston Salem.
I think my favorite vacation place is Canaan Valley, West VA. We've been
there several times in the summer to play golf. It's also beautiful in the
fall, although a little chilly. There is a wilderness area "Dolly Sods" that
is unique. The only way to get to it is up a very narrow mountain road. The
scenary was beautiful. Never been there in the winter since I don't ski. Our
vacations are usually centered around golf, therefore, we have spent alot of
time in Myrtle Beach, SC, but not as much as we used to. It has gotten way
too much overgrown. Traffic was the pits the last time we were there so don't
think we'll be going back anytime soon.
Therese - I really envy you and your trip to England & Ireland. I think I'm
the only one in my family who has not made that trip. I had a chance to go to
Ireland this Febuary with my sister Rosie, but had to pass it up due to my
ear. Don't know when I'll be able to fly again. The places you mentioned are
all the ones I would love to see in person. Someday.
