Terry -
Your plans sound great! I went to Ireland Wales and England many years
ago. My grandmother had come over to the states at the age of 12 and
had only returned once for her mother's funeral. In the summer after my
second year of college - it had been 40 years since she'd been back home
- I told her it was time togo back and she would just have to get up the
nerve to fly (she had only travelled by boat previously). So we went and
spent 4 weeks there. I gained 16 pounds because if you didn't eat
everywhere you went they were deeply hurt. Since I am only second
generation in the U.S. we had LOTS of relatives to meet and visit - so
we did lots of eating. I did break away from the Irish relatives to
spend 3 days in London - that was truly great. Be sure to take in as
much as you can there. My Irish relatives just could not understand why
I would go to London where those horrible British people lived. There
were VERY stong feelings about that. As it turned out it was my
grandmother's last trip back home and I got so much out of meeting and
living with relatives. I didn't do a lot of tourist stuff but my cousin
lived on the road that goes to Blarney Castle so I did of course kiss
the Blarney stone. BE sure not to wear a dress on that visit - you have
to get into a very awkward position to kiss the stone. Try to see the
lakes - I think it's the Ring of Kerry - very beautiful country - you
will love it. People very friendly - you just need to be down to earth
with them. They talk about the Americans that come off pushy.
Other than that I've been pretty much of a homebody. Always hoped for a
chance to relocate but jobs just never happened that way - however I
only wanted to live somewhere else so I could eventually return to DC. I
LOVE DC. Have been to the great Niagara Falls - did a trip to Montreal
and Quebec - Did a little Maine. Love to run to Manhattan for excitement
but have only been able to do that 3 or 4 times. Have made trips to NJ
countless times but due to recent death of my mother in law those trips
will drastically slow down now. My father in law is in nursing home and
not too aware of our visits.
Raleigh and Charleston are frequent destinations now with Colleen and
Tommy in school there.
Have fun - if you fly into Shannon Airport I'm looking for a catalog
from their shop.
