Westerland, capital of the Island of Sylt

We arrived on the Island of Sylt by ferry (not pictured) and left by auto train, pictured above. We actually drove our car onto the train and sat in our car during the 45 minute ride.

I took this picture of our train by holding the camera through the sun roof.

Hildegard, Wulf and Bob preparing to enjoy a phatiaes (far-i-za-a). If you're still standing after drinking 6 of these, the seventh one is free!!

You have to pay to get on the boardwalk here, but once you do you are entertained with a 17 piece, formally-dressed orchestra playing classical music in an amphitheater right on the boardwalk at two o'clock in the afternoon.

All homes on the Island of Sylt and many in north Germany have thatched roofs which last up to 50 years. Here we found one being installed.

On the North Sea the tide recedes as much as one mile. The picture above is at high tide, but notice the stairs that lead to the water. Bathers walk onto the sand and sink into the dirt up to their ankles. A shower is available next to the stairs.

Sheep graze on the grasses near the North Sea.
